Hot US Stocks To Invest In 2014

At the beginning of the year, I predicted a wave of M&A, and today we got more evidence that companies are on an acquisition binge. The good news: They don’t appear to be paying up for their acquisitions.

Since Friday, three major acquisitions have been announced. AECOM Technology(ACM) said it would buy URS(URS) for $4 billion; Mylan(MYL) agreed to pay $5.3 billion forAbbott Laboratories(ABT) non-U.S. generic drug business; and Whiting Petroleum (WLL) said it would take over Kodiak Oil & Gas (KOG). And amazingly, none of them appear to be overpriced.

First up: The Whiting Petroleum-Kodiak Oil & Gas merger. Wunderlich Securities analyst Jason Wangler worries that Whiting got too good a deal:

Whiting Petroleumis paying just $13.90 per share for KOG in an all-equity deal. You read that right, and frankly its the most interesting part in our view, as Kodiak Oil & Gas’s stock closed Friday over 2% higher than that figure and the premium as of now is just 5% above the 60 day average for Kodiak Oil & Gas. In our view, this is a great/accretive price forWhiting Petroleum and its shareholders but forKodiak Oil & Gas and its shareholders it doesn’t seem all that compelling. Granted it’s an all equity deal so the upside isn’t gone but none is realized today…

Hot US Stocks To Invest In 2014: Centor Energy Inc (CNTO)

Centor Energy Inc, formerly Centor, Inc., incorporated on February 16, 2011, is an exploration-stage company. The Company is engaged in the business of mineral exploration.

On November 26, 2012, the Company entered into a purchase agreement with Bullnet Gold Resources Limited. As of May 31, 2013, the Company had not generated revenues. As of May 31, 2013, the Company had no mining operations.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By James E. Brumley]

Well, that answers that question. Questerre Energy Corp. (TSE:QEC) and Crescent Point Energy Corp. (TSE:CPG) likely knew they had some shale-oil mining neighbors in the Bakken Shale neighborhood in Saskatchewan, Canada, but they hadn't seen much of that competition. That's about to change soon. Adequately funded and eager to begin laying its final mining plans, Centor Energy Inc. (OTCBB:CNTO) is going to officially own 55% of a 21,000 acre shale oil property that's anywhere from just a few miles away to just a few meters away from and Crescent Point Energy's and Questerre Energy's operations in one of the oil-richest known areas in the Bakken formation. And to be clear, it's not like Centor Energy is just getting the ball rolling; the planning for this project has been underway for months. Once the property-acquisition deal is inked in mid-February, CNTO will likely finish up its feasibility study and begin the approval process for its facility later in the year. That's pretty quick, but as was noted, a great deal of the legwork has already been done.

It's admittedly scary to try and catch a falling knife, but sometimes it's worth the risk. Case in point? AvWorks Aviation Corp. (OTCMKTS:SPLI) .... better known as Vapor Group. Without knowing more about the stock, the sheer fact that SPLI has fallen nearly 90% since March 26th - with about a third of that coming today alone - the stock would be best left avoided by nearly any trader. For the small group of savvy traders that know the tell-tale signs and know how the market really works, however, AvWorks Aviation, or Vapor Group, may be in a prime buying situation today.... yes, even in the midst of this bloodbath.

The CELC grew throughout the 19th century, but it was nearly destroyed by the catastrophic earthquake that struck San Francisco in 1906. It became part of Pacific Gas and Electric (NYSE: PCG  ) shortly after the city rebuilt. Today, PG&E is not only the largest public utility company in the United States, but it's also continued the legacy of the CELC as one of the world's most innovative utilities. It was the first utility in the United States to operate a nuclear power plant, and it currently commands by far the largest solar-energy capacity of any utility in the country.

Whereas in the 1970s there were limited ways to hedge against inflation, now there is a cornucopia of currency and international commodities instruments that can not only hedge against inflation but other global shocks, such as market bubbles and even war.

And it is these very scenarios that investors have been worried about. Since the beginning of the year, stocks, bonds and just about any investment you can think of have gyrated wildly at various times amid concerns of war, inflation and the possibility that the U.S. equity market is overvalued and headed for a correction.

In response, some market analysts in Bloomberg news reports have offered any number of wildly unsubstantiated statements for why investors should ignore today’s perils. They dismiss the danger posed by Russia annexation of Ukraine Crimea region (utin will stop short of other countries or war with the West. Best High Tech Companies To Own In Right Now

For the past year, Exelon Corp. (EXC) has had a roller coaster ride, with the stock having plummeted 15% since September 2012 - the company had announced a dividend cut of 41%, which led to a drop in the share price. Separately, the recent weak PJM auction prices did not bode well for the company. However, I believe the worst is priced in the stock price, and the company's management is committed to improving its financial flexibility and cost structure in order to strengthen its financial performance. Also, the company is planning to incur capital expenditure (CAPEX) in the upcoming years, which will result in rate base growth for Exelon.

Earlier this week, on September 11, the company presented at the Barclays CEO Energy-Power Conference. Important takeaways from the presentation were that the company updated its investment plans to achieve earnings growth, implement cost control measures, optimize its generation portfolio and improve its operational excellence.

Synopsis: As a result of the terms of its bankruptcy and the proposed merger with U.S. Airways (LCC), an equity investment in AMR Corp (AAMRQ.PK) is equivalent to a series of derivatives on LCC. At current market values, AAMRQ is undervalued by approximately 40%. It is possible to create an arbitrage position that should capture this pricing differential over the next 6 months.

Last but not the least is US Airways Group (LCC), in which Y/Cap slightly increased its position, now owning around $7.9 million. U.S. Airways is currently on the minds of many investors, mainly due to its plans to merge with American Airlines parent AMR Corp (AAMRQ.PK). While European regulators approved the merger, the U.S. Department of Justice put a spoke in the wheel, and is trying to block the move. The companies filed a motion to the court to set the trial date for November 12. Amid these actions, U.S. Airways and American Airlines prolonged the outside date at which one of the companies can terminate the proposed merger.

Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated Plays the Earnings Waiting Game

Sales of Vertex Pharmaceuticals' (NASDAQ: VRTX  ) cystic fibrosis drug, Kalydeco, increased 25% year over year in the third quarter, but that's nothing compared with the sales potential for its cystic fibrosis drug franchise.

It just has to get the drugs approved and persuade countries to pay for it.

Source: Vertex Pharmaceuticals.

About 2,600 patients are currently eligible for reimbursement for Kalydeco, but Vertex Pharmaceuticals is working toward getting the drug approved to treat additional mutations and gain reimbursement coverage, which should bring that number to around 4,000 patients.

In the U.S., the FDA approved its use in eight additional mutations earlier this year, which accounts for much of the third-quarter growth. In Europe, sales increased as coverage for the G551D came online. The third-quarter sales also benefited from a one-time $7 million bump as Vertex expanded its distribution network in anticipation of expanding on its cystic fibrosis drug franchise. Keep those sales in mind when comparing quarter-over-quarter sales in the fourth quarter.

To get to around 4,000 patients eligible for Kalydeco, Vertex needs the FDA to approve the drug for use in patients with the R117H mutation. Last week an FDA advisory committee voted 13-2 recommending that Kalydeco be approved to treat patients with the R117H mutation. If the FDA follows its outside experts' advice, the drug could be approved on or before its PDUFA date of Dec. 30. Combined with the EU -- where an application is also pending -- and Australia, the R117H mutation could add another 1,100 patients or more.

Kalydeco is also up for approval in the U.S. and EU to treat patients aged 2-5, which could expand its use by another 300 patients.

Expanding from 2,600 patients to 4,000 patients sounds like a lot until you look at the 28,000 patients who could be eligible for treatment with Kalydeco combined with ivacaftor. After releasing positive phase 3 data earlier this year, Vertex is on track to file marketing applications for the combination with the FDA and EU regulators this quarter, which could result in a U.S. approval in the middle of next year and approval in the EU a little bit after that.

If regulators approve the drugs for all the new indications and payers agree to cover the drugs, Vertex is going to look like a much different company a year from now. Until then, investors will have to settle for only a 25% increase in sales.

Top 10 High Dividend Companies To Invest In Right Now

In the world of triple-net REITs, most of the attention in the past week has been on the planned merger of American Capital Realty Properties (ARCP) and Cole Real Estate Investments (COLE). I recently wrote about ARCP, noting that the REIT had seen heavy insider buying over the summer at prices higher than today. I also recommended the stock based on its growth prospects within a sector I love and its high dividend yield — 6.7% at today prices.

ARCP fell on the news on the COLE merger, which is typical for the acquiring firm (as a general rule, the acquirer falls and the acquired rises). But I continue to see value in REITs and ARCP in particular.

Today, however, I want to highlight other insider buying for REITs, namely, in a competitor of ARCP and COLE:Stag Industrial (STAG).

Two names worth considering here are Thermo Fisher Scientific (NYSE: TMO  ) and Illumina (NASDAQ: ILMN  ) . Thermo Fisher makes the list as it's in the process of purchasing Life Technologies (NASDAQ: LIFE  ) for $13.6 billion. In early 2012, Life Technologies introduced the Benchtop Ion Proton Sequencer, which is capable of delivering same-day genome results for just $1,000! Illumina, on the other hand, has researchers' bases covered from all ends. It offers four high-end sequencing machines, a lower-priced sequencer (MiSeq), and can handle cloud-based data to formulate decoding. These two companies could be the cornerstone of nCoV research!

As part of its plan to pay for the acquisition of Life Technologies (NASDAQ: LIFE  ) , life-sciences specialist Thermo Fisher Scientific (NYSE: TMO  ) announced yesterday that it was selling 25.7 million shares at $85.50 per share in a public offering of its stock.

  • [By Alex Planes]

It's been only a few trading days since Illumina surged on a strong earnings report, showing that there's still plenty of life in the sequencing sector. However, competition is only bound to increase now that erstwhile rival Life Technologies (NASDAQ: LIFE  ) has found its white knight in Thermo Fisher Scientific (NYSE: TMO  ) . I've been optimistic on Life Tech's prospects for some time -- you can read more about my opinions in an analyst debate I held with fellow Fools Travis Hoium and Sean Williams last year -- and that opinion hasn't changed now that Life Tech has even deeper pockets to dip into for research dollars:

    Catalyst: Technical Setup

The combination of a low share price and a big market cap make Paris-based communications stock Alcatel Lucent (ALU) a perennial name on our list of most active stocks. Today, shares of ALU are down 4.2%, driven mainly by the technical setup that's showing early signs of a top in shares. For now, ALU's uptrend remains intact, but a crack below support at $2.40 is the signal that it's time to exit the long-side of this name.

For now, it's early to run for the door. Late-comers to this stock should wait for a support bounce for a lower-entry.

We re-established an investment in CME Group, Inc. (CME) during the period. CME is the largest and most diversified derivatives marketplace in the U.S. Its exchanges support trading across a variety of asset classes, including interest rates, equity indexes, energy, agricultural commodities, foreign exchange and metals. We believe CME has the opportunity to significantly accelerate its growth rates due to the eventual normalization of interest rates and the attendant interest rate volatility. CME's interest rate trading volumes (ADV) have been depressed as a result of the Fed's zero interest rate policy and low interest rate volatility. For example, interest rate ADV was 4.8 million in 2012compared to 7.1 million in 2007, before the financial crisis. However, given the Fed's recent policy statements (discussed above), market participants are starting to anticipate an end to quantitative easing (QE). On May 30, CME experienced record volume for interest rate derivatives with ADV of 19.4 million. With the globalization of CME's business, a host of new products, and the regulatory requirement for interest rate swaps to be cleared on an exchange, we believe CME's interest rate volumes can surpass their prior peak, significantly driving earnings growth for the company.

Getty Images Despite claims to the contrary from credit agencies and identity protection services, if you're the victim of identity theft, ultimately, you're on your own. I learned that firsthand. So let me tell what you need to know, including some decidedly low-tech tips to protect yourself from an identity theft threat you probably never considered. Recently, as I was going through the mail, I found a letter welcoming my wife as a new AT&T (T) customer. This struck me as odd since both my wife and I had been using a different carrier for more than 10 years. The letter indicated that my wife had opened an account with AT&T mobile and that she had purchased five iPhones and two iPads. "Honey," I yelled. "I think we have a problem." And we did. After contacting AT&T, we found out that someone, using my wife's information, had gone into one of its retail stores, opened an account in her name, purchased numerous items and walked out. After I informed AT&T that this was a case of fraud, the company immediately closed the account, informed us that we would not liable for the purchases and said it would remove the inquiries from my wife's credit report. A Second Theft No harm, no foul, I reasoned, making a mental note to sign up with the credit protection service LifeLock (LOCK). However, before I could, we received a letter from T-Mobile (TMUS). Yes, you guessed it, welcoming my wife as a new customer. The identity thieves had done the same thing. Again, T-Mobile was great, canceling the account and telling us we were not liable. However, now I knew we had a serious issue. I immediately called LifeLock and signed up myself, my wife and our two minor children to its service. I signed up my kids because a common variation on the identity theft scam is to steal and use the Social Security numbers of minors. It's only years later, when your child first uses their number to apply for credit, perhaps for a student loan or to buy their first car, th
