Best Value Companies To Buy For 2015

Research Affiliates is best known for its fundamental indexing strategies that seek to capture inherent value that capitalization-based indexes based on market price overlook.

It is therefore something of a surprise to see in the August newsletter of Research Affiliates, the Newport Beach-based firm founded by Rob Arnott, a not entirely negative evaluation of momentum-based investing, which is, after all, a strategy that is opposite to value investing (on which fundamental indexing is based).

The article, “Hot Potato: Momentum as an Investment Strategy,” by Research Affiliates Vice President Ryan Larson, describes momentum as a “lively game of hot potato—buying rapidly appreciating stocks, holding them for a relatively short period, and selling them before their price trends reverse direction.”

Larson reviews evidence for momentum and cites studies showing it can have superlative results in favorable conditions. For example, he cites the first comprehensive study of the subject in 1993, which found momentum to be the best-performing strategy from 1965 to 1989. In that period, that entailed buying stocks that outperformed the previous 12 months while shorting losers and holding those positions for the subsequent three months.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

But sales trends remain abysmal in many parts of the market, especially in the former growth hot-spot of the Asia-Pacific region. Rival Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) has seen sales in the region swing from year-over-year gains as recently as November to declines of 20% or more in each of the past three months. Latin America has been a bright spot for Caterpillar, but otherwise, the rest of the world has seen a substantial slowdown, with overall sales down 13% in April.

  • [By Daniel Miller]

The U.S. economy has rebounded gradually, which is more than the rest of the world can say. Unfortunately for Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) , which derives the majority of its profits internationally, a global rebound can't come soon enough. The stock is down about 22% over the last 12 months and sits at a price to earnings ratio well below its historical average. Caterpillar recently released its first-quarter information, which disappointed investors but its stock price remained unaffected it even rose in the days after the earnings release. Does this mean Caterpillar stock has finally bottomed out, giving investors a chance to buy in?

    Where growth will come from
One area that Newell Rubbermaid still has to tap fully is emerging markets. The company has done a good job of expanding overseas, with 17% annual growth in Latin America. But with barely a quarter of its sales coming from outside the U.S. and Canada, the company has a lot further to go. Storage rival Tupperware (NYSE: TUP  ) gets fully 60% of its total revenue from emerging markets, and it too has seen impressive gains in South America as well as the Asia-Pacific region.

Halliburton (NYSE: HAL  ) andSchlumberger (NYSE: SLB  ) are two larger competitors with market capitalizations two and five times that of Baker Hughes, respectively. Schlumberger, which is the industry leader, trades at the highest valuation multiples: 2.7 times 2012's annual revenues and 21 times earnings. Halliburton and Baker Hughes trade at lower and more acceptable earnings ratios of around 18 times earnings for 2012. Note that these competitors have seen rapid growth and margin expansion in recent years as well.

A few of the compelling companies
From my perspective, the message to be taken away from Stuart's presentation is simply that, even in the face of potential U.S. economic distress, a well-structured portfolio will contain at least a modicum of energy of names. For starters I'd look to Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB  ) , the world's leading oilfield services company and energy's technology major domo. Given its operations in about 85 countries, a worldwide energy cataclysm would seemingly be required for the big company to face a significant slowdown.

Not surprisingly, the industry's annual capital spending has more than tripled over the past decade, coming in at $550 billion in 2011, according to oil-field services firm Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB  ) . Yet despite shelling out all that money, the industry as a whole has been unable to secure enough new reserves to offset production.

Facebook agrees to buy WhatsApp for $16B

SAN FRANCISCO — In one of the biggest technology deals of the past decade, Facebook agreed to buy WhatsApp for $16 billion to expand in the fast-growing mobile messaging market and pursue its goal of connecting as much of the world's population as possible over the Internet.

Facebook said it will pay $4 billion in cash and $12 billion in stock for WhatsApp, a service that has 450 million monthly users and is adding more than 1 million new users a day.

"WhatsApp is on a path to connect 1 billion people. The services that reach that milestone are all incredibly valuable," Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a statement announcing the deal.

STORY: What is WhatsApp?

Zuckerberg has been trying to get into the mobile messaging market for a while. The company offered to buy Snapchat for $3 billion last year, but that messaging start-up spurned the offer.

To close the WhatsApp deal, Facebook offered an extra $3 billion in restricted stock units, a common type of equity compensation, to WhatsApp founders and employees. These awards will vest over four years. Jan Koum, WhatsApp's co-founder and CEO, also gets a seat on Facebook's board of directors.

While dwarfed by Time Warner's purchase of AOL at the height of the first dot-com boom, Facebook's $16 billion deal ranks as the fourth-largest technology acquisition of the past decade, according to Dealogic.

Zuckerberg paid so much for WhatsApp because the 5-year-old start-up is at the forefront of a new breed of mobile messaging apps that are becoming the main way smartphone users communicate with each other, especially in fast-growing developing markets like Africa, India and Southeast Asia.

Social networks like Facebook are currently the dominant way to keep in touch online, but that could change, and Zuckerberg does not want to be left behind.

"Facebook is trying to get involved in the new era of communication," said Ben Bajarin, principal industry analyst at tech research firm Creative Strategies. "It has ! shifted from social networking to these messaging services, which are becoming new platforms in and of themselves."

Zuckerberg has a broader goal of connecting most of the people on the globe through the Internet, and on Wednesday he said that WhatsApp fits well with this long-term effort.

The Facebook CEO said he contacted WhatsApp's Koum on Feb. 9 to suggest the two companies combine to pursue this vision. Koum thought about it for roughly a week and expressed interest. Then the two met to discuss the price of an acquisition and arrived at the deal that was announced Wednesday.

"For the next several yeas, we will focus on growing and connecting everyone in the world," Zuckerberg said during a conference call with Wall Street analysts. "Once we get to a service with 1 billion, 2, maybe 3 billion users one day ... then we can think about ways to monetize."

WhatsApp will stay an independent company. But as a part of Facebook, it will be able to focus purely on growth for longer, he added.

In the past, much of the spread of the Internet happened on desktop computers. But now the majority of new Internet users get connected through smartphones, which are expected to outnumber PCs soon.

Messaging services, like Line in Japan, WeChat in China and Kakao in South Korea, are the must-have apps for many of these new smartphone users.

"There was a time 12 to 18 months ago in emerging markets when one of the primary reasons to get a smartphone was to get on Facebook. That's not the case anymore," Bajarin said. "These messaging apps are the reason now. Everyone is asking their friends whether they are on these services."

Investor: Darden's Red Lobster Spinoff Plan Not Enough

A Red Lobster seafood casual dining chain restaurant.Alamy Activist investor Barington Capital Group said Monday it was disappointed with a recent plan by Darden Restaurants (DRI) to spin off its Red Lobster chain to enhance shareholder value. Barington, which leads a shareholders' group that owns a stake of more than 2 percent in the chain, said in a statement it views Darden's plan "as incomplete and inadequate." "Darden's board of directors and management team are focused on creating value for all Darden shareholders," a spokesman said in a statement. "We are confident that our plan, together with actions we are taking to enhance guest experiences and reinvigorate demand, will lead to improved performance in our restaurants and substantially increase value for all Darden shareholders." New York-based Barington, which has previously urged Darden management to break up the company and explore spinning off its real estate properties, said it was particularly disappointed that Darden's plan failed to unlock value from the company's real estate holdings. Barington estimates that Darden's real estate could be worth $4 billion. Barington has recommended Darden explore creating a publicly traded real estate investment trust to get full value for the real estate assets. Barington also said it believes that just separating Red Lobster from the rest of Darden will still leave the company with too many brands. "Unfortunately, Darden's proposed plan appears to us to be more of an attempt to do the minimum necessary to maintain the status quo than an effort to formulate a truly comprehensive strategy to improve long-term shareholder value," the fund said its statement. Barington recommends that Darden split into two companies: one for Olive Garden and Red Lobster, and the other for its higher growth brands, including LongHorn Steakhouse, The Capital Grille, Yard House and Bahama Breeze. Darden, which manages eight restaurant brands, has become too large and complex to compete with its rivals, Barington has said. Activist investor Starboard Value has also come out publicly in favor of pushing for change at Darden.

Time to Talk about Nuance

I want to take advantage of this soft spot in the market to pick up shares of a rare tech stock that is trading at a discount; the company is the market leader in voice-recognition software, suggests Tyler Laundon, editor of Top Stock Insights.

You're probably most aware of Nuance Communications (NUAN) because of its Dragon voice-recognition software, the iPhone's personal assistant known as "Siri," or from that "Swype" technology found on Android phones. Nuance has developed all of these products.

You've also been exposed to the company's software if you've called a company and been directed to an automated answering service. Nuance does a lot of work with call centers.

And if you've been in a newer BMW or Audi, you may have used Nuance's software to relay directions to the car's GPS unit. These are all areas where Nuance's voice-recognition technology is being used today.

Top Blue Chip Stocks To Own Right Now

The company is also a major player in the healthcare market too. One of its products helps care providers create and manage electronic records. Doctors can dictate details of a patient's visit, and that information will automatically convert into text in the required forms.

Yes, voice-recognition technology still has a way to go before people stop getting frustrated with its shortcomings. Siri isn't exactly perfect. And Dragon certainly requires some careful editing. But the software is still incredibly useful. And it's only going to improve.

The number of new products coming out with voice-recognition features is snowballing. Next on the product list are things like TV, household lighting controls, thermostats, and wearable technologies.

The company is transitioning from a license business to a subscription business model, which makes for messy quarter-over-quarter and year-over-year financial analysis.

The bottom line is that we'll look over most of that noise because the fundamentals of the business suggest NUAN's best days lie ahead. It has valuable voice-recognition technology that is in demand in several large markets (mobile, auto, healthcare).

And while mobile has historically been the largest growth driver, the more diversified markets NUAN expects to serve in the future, along with the subscription business model, should mean more consistent growth. Shares are cheap, but I don't expect they'll remain that way for too long.

Finally, there is a real push inside the NUAN shareholder base to get the company back on track. In mid-December, activist investor Carl Icahn disclosed that he owns a 19.2% stake in the company. That's a hefty vote of confidence in this company.

Smarter Ways to Give to Charity

Smarter Ways to Give to CharityPittsburgh Post-Gazette/ZUMAPRESS.com via Alamy A lot of people scramble to make charitable contributions before Dec. 31 to get a tax break, but they may not be making the maximum impact -- either for the charity or for their own tax situation. "When people give at the last minute, they may not be in a position to be as strategic with their giving," says Sara Montgomery, philanthropic services specialist with Wells Fargo (WFC) Private Bank. Sometimes you unintentionally end up diluting the focus of your giving because you didn't have a plan in place, she says. And you may be able to stretch your tax benefits by planning in advance. Here are tips to help you make the most of your charitable contributions throughout the year. Make a charitable-giving plan. As you gather your 2013 charitable-giving receipts to file your taxes this spring, think about how you'd like to do it differently this year. Are there charities you would like to support more? Did you write checks last year you felt obligated to write? Ask your favorite charities what they need the most -- say, cash at certain times of the year (it's not always in December) or larger donations spread over several years. "If you start planning earlier, you can give to the charity in a thoughtful way that makes the gift more meaningful," says Tracy A. Craig, partner and chairwoman of the trusts and estates department at Mirick O'Connell, a law firm in Worcester, Mass. When you have more time, you can work with the charity to designate a specific purpose for the funds or make the most of matching offers. You may also discover that another type of giving could work better for you, such as a investing in a charitable gift annuity if you want to create an income stream for yourself, or making a charity the beneficiary of an IRA or life insurance policy. Build charitable savings throughout the year. Rather than rush to make contributions in December, set aside a little bit of money for charitable giving throughout the year. You don't need to make your contributions then; you can keep the money in a savings account earmarked for charitable giving or in a donor-advised fund so it's ready to go when you're ready (see below for more information about donor-advised funds). "If giving is important to you, make it a line item in your budget," says Montgomery. Another benefit of saving early is that you'll have some money ready to give if you want to help victims of a natural disaster or other emergency. Get an extra tax break from appreciated stock. Giving appreciated stock or mutual funds to charity gives you an extra tax benefit: You can deduct the current value of the investment as a charitable contribution if you itemize, and you'll avoid paying capital-gains taxes on the profits. (You'd owe capital-gains taxes if you sold the stock first and then wrote a check.) Identify investments you may want to donate during the year, and set a target price for transferring them to charity. Ask the charity ahead of time about the steps for transferring ownership, so you're ready to take action when the stock or fund hits your target price. For more information, see Charities: Give Stocks Instead. Consider a donor-advised fund. You can set up a donor-advised fund through many brokerage firms, mutual fund companies and community foundations. You get a tax deduction based on the date you give the money to the fund, but you have a nearly unlimited amount of time to decide which charities to support (you may be required to give a minimum amount every few years from the fund). You can't take back your donations, and the administrator has the ultimate say over which charities to support, although most requests are honored as long as the charity is a 501c3 organization in good standing. You usually invest the money in mutual funds or investment pools until you've chosen the charities to support. You can donate cash, stocks, mutual funds or other assets, and some donor-advised funds even accept shares of privately held companies, real estate and other complicated assets.

5 Stocks Breaking Out on Big Volume

DELAFIELD, Wis. (Stockpickr) -- Professional traders running mutual funds and hedge funds don't just look at a stock's price moves; they also track big changes in volume activity. Often when above-average volume moves into an equity, it precedes a large spike in volatility.

>>5 Stocks Under $10 Set to Soar

Major moves in volume can signal unusual activity, such as insider buying or selling -- or buying or selling by "superinvestors."

Unusual volume can also be a major signal that hedge funds and momentum traders are piling into a stock ahead of a catalyst. These types of traders like to get in well before a large spike, so it's always a smart move to monitor unusual volume. That said, remember to combine trend and price action with unusual volume. Put them all together to help you decipher the next big trend for any stock.

>>5 Rocket Stocks to Buy for a Santa Claus Rally

With that in mind, let's take a look at several stocks rising on unusual volume recently.

Madison Square Garden

Madison Square Garden (MSG) operates in the sports, entertainment and media businesses primarily in the U.S. This stock closed up 1.3% at $56.70 in Thursday's trading session.

Thursday's Volume: 582,000

Three-Month Average Volume: 412,491

Volume % Change: 50%

From a technical perspective, MSG spiked modestly higher here right off some near-term support at $56 with above-average volume. This move is quickly pushing shares of MSG within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if MSG manages to take out its 50-day moving average of $56.92 and its 200-day moving average of $58.15 and then once it clears more key overhead resistance at $58.50 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in MSG as long as it's trending above Monday's low of $56 or above $55.50 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that's near or above 412,491 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then MSG will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $61.50 to its 52-week high at $63.44.

Mattress Firm

Mattress Firm (MFRM) is a specialty retailer of mattresses and related products and accessories in the U.S. This stock closed up 5.8% at $44.50 in Thursday's trading session.

Thursday's Volume: 271,000

Three-Month Average Volume: 227,033

Volume % Change: 50%

From a technical perspective, MFRM trended sharply higher here right above some near-term support at $41 with above-average volume. This stock has been uptrending strong for the last two months, with shares soaring higher from its low near $29 to its intraday high of $44.62. During that uptrend, shares of MFRM have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That trade will hit if MFRM manages to take out its 52-week high at $46.85 to its all-time high at $48.18 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in MFRM as long as it's trending above Thursday's low of $41.86 or above $40, and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 227,033 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then MFRM will set up to enter new 52-week- and all-time-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $55 to $60.

Bitauto

Bitauto (BITA) is a provider of Internet content and marketing services for China's automotive industry. This stock closed up 7.7% to $31.27 in Thursday's trading session.

Thursday's Volume: 2.20 million

Three-Month Average Volume: 1.16 million

Volume % Change: 126%

From a technical perspective, BITA spiked sharply higher here right above its 50-day moving average of $27.99 with strong upside volume. This move pushed shares of BITA into breakout territory, since the stock took out some near-term overhead resistance at $30.11. Shares of BITA are now quickly moving within range of triggering another near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if BITA manage to clear Thursday's high of $31.89 to some more near-term overhead resistance at $32.90 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in BITA as long as it's trending above Monday's low of $29.22 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 1.16 million shares. If that breakout hits soon, then BITA will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance level at its 52-week high of $35.04. Any high-volume move above that level will then give BITA a chance to tag $40.

Ukraine restricts money flow to stop bleeding

ukraine protests

Anti-government activists picket in front of the Ukrainian parliament in Kiev, calling for the government to curb the president's powers.

LONDON (CNNMoney) Ukraine imposed restrictions on the movement of money out of the country Friday to stabilize its battered currency as it burns through reserves of hard cash.

National Bank of Ukraine data show the country's reserves of foreign currency fell to $17.8 billion at the end of January, from $20.4 billion a month earlier.

The central bank said the capital controls would be temporary and were part of a broader move to shore up the economy.

The hryvnia has fallen by roughly 8% since the start of 2014, hitting a five-year low versus the U.S. dollar this week, as investors took fright at growing political instability.

Best Casino Stocks To Watch For 2015

The currency bounced back Friday, but analysts said further falls were likely if Ukraine fails to agree to a bailout with Russia or the European Union.

"In the absence of a sizeable assistance package from either Russia or the EU, Ukraine's low level of foreign exchange reserves means that a disorderly devaluation, in which the hryvnia overshoots on the downside, remains a real threat," wrote emerging markets economist Neil Shearing from Capital Economics, estimating the currency could fall by another 20%.

Ukraine has been facing deep political and economic uncertainty since President Viktor Yanukovych made a policy U-turn in late November, announcing his government was suspending talks on a planned EU trade deal and instead opting to form closer economic ties with Russia.

Thousands of anti-government demonstrators have packed Kiev's Independence Square since then, underscoring tensions in a country split between pro-European regions in the west and a more Russia-oriented east.

Russia bought $3 billion in Ukrainian government bonds in December as part of an aid package worth about $15 billion -- and also offered Ukraine big discounts on natural gas. But Moscow now appears unwilling to hand over any more money because of the political backlash.

A weaker currency and dwindling reserves are making it harder for Ukraine to pay its debts, including bills for Russian gas imports.

Fitch cut Ukraine's credit rating to "CCC" on Friday, implying a real possibility of default.

Russian ener! gy giant Gazprom (GZPFY) said Wednesday that Ukraine owed $2.6 billion for natural gas imports in 2013, and may owe as much as $658 million for January.

And speaking of top dividend stocks with high capital gains potential, next on the list of are Brazilian banking groups Banco Bradesco (BBD) and Banco Itau (ITUB) — two monthly dividend stocks you must consider.

  • [By Hilary Kramer]

Itau Unibanco (ITUB): A lot of investors have never heard of Itau because it’s headquartered in Brazil, but it’s one of the world’s largest financial institutions. With 5,000 branches, 100,000 employees and nearly $500 billion in assets (yes, half a trillion!), ITUB is not just the largest Latin American bank, it is one of the biggest in the world. With proven dominance in Brazil (and Latin America), Itau Unibanco is a go-to financial pick, and it currently yields an attractive 3.5%. I recently recommended that my Inner Circle readers sell ITUB on a nice bounce due to the risk of near-term weakness on economic data out of China, but I already looking for an opportunity to get back in.

Advisors' Opinion:

Bank of America (NYSE: BAC  ) or Citigroup (NYSE: C  ) took much more risk in the housing boom, suffered much more damage in the crisis, and would have almost certainly gone under without help from the federal government. Both of these banks are still struggling to repair their balance sheets -- and their reputations -- while Jamie Dimon can honestly tout his bank's "fortress balance sheet."

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Rich Smith]

In fact, Citi has already made moves in this direction, picking up Best Buy's (NYSE: BBY  ) branded credit card business from Capital One (NYSE: COF  ) earlier this year. Granted, this move seems to contradict Citi's old strategy of lightening up on credit cards, as demonstrated when it unloaded a $1.6 billion credit card portfolio on General Electric (NYSE: GE  ) back in 2010. But that was then, this is now, and today, DTAs are the issue that needs fixing.

Goldman Sachs analysts upgraded financial services company BB&T Corporation (BBT) on Tuesday because the stock offers an upside to earnings in a rising interest rate environment.

The analysts upgraded BBT from “Neutral” to “Buy” and see shares reaching $39, up from the previous target of $37. This new price target suggests a 13% upside to the stock’s Monday closing price of $34.48.

The analysts cited three main factors for the upgrade. For one, as mentioned above, BB&T offers an upside to earnings in a rising interest rate environment because it is leveraged to the long-end of the yield curve. Also, the analysts expect the company’s credit losses to continue to improve. Finally, the analysts expect BB&T’s loan growth to pick up.

Moreover, Goldman Sachs boosted BB&T’s fiscal 2013, 2014, and 2015 EPS estimates to $2.50, $3.22, and $3.55, respectively.

BB&T Corp shares were up 42 cents, or 1.22%, during pre-market trading on Tuesday. The stock is up 18.45% year-to-date.

M-Pesa, the system that revolutionized mobile payments in Kenya and beyond, is not capital intensive for Safaricom, but the company has to pay 10% of revenues to Vodafone, which runs the system's technology backbone. Safaricom is planning to take this job on itself going forward, which should increase profitability, though there would be some operational risk if they can't deliver the same level of service. M-Pesa has now spawned M-Shwari, which is the same concept but adds mobile banking services such as the provision of credit. This new service is delivered in partnership with the unlisted Commercial Bank of Africa (CBA).

It's easy for U.S. investors to paint Canadian banks with a single brush-stroke, as the differences in the banking system helped keep Bank of Montreal and its peers safer during the financial crisis five years ago. As Canada's housing market has kept rising even after the housing bust south of its border, however, investors have gotten increasingly concerned about the potential health of its banks, especially the largest ones. With downgrades for Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (NYSE: CM  ) , Toronto-Dominion (NYSE: TD  ) , and Bank of Montreal among a total of six banks in January, Moody's identified higher debt levels among Canadian consumers as driving potential risk for the economy.

The year ahead should be a great one for the smaller bank stocks. Larger regionals like Huntington Bancorp (HBAN) and Capital Ban Financial (CBF) have made it clear they intend to grow by acquisition in the years ahead. Banks like First Merit (FMER) and First Merchants (FRME) have done deals in the past year and are open to doing more to increase their market share and footprints. This should be the year the floodgates open and we see the first wave of merger activity in small banks.
