Itau Unibanco (ITUB): A lot of investors have never heard of Itau because it’s headquartered in Brazil, but it’s one of the world’s largest financial institutions. With 5,000 branches, 100,000 employees and nearly $500 billion in assets (yes, half a trillion!), ITUB is not just the largest Latin American bank, it is one of the biggest in the world. With proven dominance in Brazil (and Latin America), Itau Unibanco is a go-to financial pick, and it currently yields an attractive 3.5%. I recently recommended that my Inner Circle readers sell ITUB on a nice bounce due to the risk of near-term weakness on economic data out of China, but I already looking for an opportunity to get back in.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By John Grgurich]
Bank of America (NYSE: BAC ) or Citigroup (NYSE: C ) took much more risk in the housing boom, suffered much more damage in the crisis, and would have almost certainly gone under without help from the federal government. Both of these banks are still struggling to repair their balance sheets -- and their reputations -- while Jamie Dimon can honestly tout his bank's "fortress balance sheet."

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Rich Smith]
In fact, Citi has already made moves in this direction, picking up Best Buy's (NYSE: BBY ) branded credit card business from Capital One (NYSE: COF ) earlier this year. Granted, this move seems to contradict Citi's old strategy of lightening up on credit cards, as demonstrated when it unloaded a $1.6 billion credit card portfolio on General Electric (NYSE: GE ) back in 2010. But that was then, this is now, and today, DTAs are the issue that needs fixing.

When the financial world fell apart a few years ago -- you remember -- British banks got mauled. Barclays, Lloyds Banking Group (NYSE: LYG ) , Royal Bank of Scotland (NYSE: RBS ) , and a handful more that have since been absorbed or disbanded -- no one made it out unscathed. The problems came to a head when U.K. taxpayers were forced to bail out Lloyds and RBS. That bailout cost the U.K. an reported 23 billion pounds through the end of 2012.

Goldman Sachs analysts upgraded financial services company BB&T Corporation (BBT) on Tuesday because the stock offers an upside to earnings in a rising interest rate environment.
The analysts upgraded BBT from “Neutral” to “Buy” and see shares reaching $39, up from the previous target of $37. This new price target suggests a 13% upside to the stock’s Monday closing price of $34.48.
The analysts cited three main factors for the upgrade. For one, as mentioned above, BB&T offers an upside to earnings in a rising interest rate environment because it is leveraged to the long-end of the yield curve. Also, the analysts expect the company’s credit losses to continue to improve. Finally, the analysts expect BB&T’s loan growth to pick up.
Moreover, Goldman Sachs boosted BB&T’s fiscal 2013, 2014, and 2015 EPS estimates to $2.50, $3.22, and $3.55, respectively.

M-Pesa, the system that revolutionized mobile payments in Kenya and beyond, is not capital intensive for Safaricom, but the company has to pay 10% of revenues to Vodafone, which runs the system's technology backbone. Safaricom is planning to take this job on itself going forward, which should increase profitability, though there would be some operational risk if they can't deliver the same level of service. M-Pesa has now spawned M-Shwari, which is the same concept but adds mobile banking services such as the provision of credit. This new service is delivered in partnership with the unlisted Commercial Bank of Africa (CBA).

It's easy for U.S. investors to paint Canadian banks with a single brush-stroke, as the differences in the banking system helped keep Bank of Montreal and its peers safer during the financial crisis five years ago. As Canada's housing market has kept rising even after the housing bust south of its border, however, investors have gotten increasingly concerned about the potential health of its banks, especially the largest ones. With downgrades for Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (NYSE: CM ) , Toronto-Dominion (NYSE: TD ) , and Bank of Montreal among a total of six banks in January, Moody's identified higher debt levels among Canadian consumers as driving potential risk for the economy.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Tim Melvin]
The year ahead should be a great one for the smaller bank stocks. Larger regionals like Huntington Bancorp (HBAN) and Capital Ban Financial (CBF) have made it clear they intend to grow by acquisition in the years ahead. Banks like First Merit (FMER) and First Merchants (FRME) have done deals in the past year and are open to doing more to increase their market share and footprints. This should be the year the floodgates open and we see the first wave of merger activity in small banks.
