Indeed, consumer-oriented stocks are among the weakest performers in the Dow today. Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO ) is down 2%, likely in response to a reduced forecast from independent bottler Coca-Cola Enterprises (NYSE: CCE ) . The bottling company said continued trouble in the European economy combined with cold, rainy weather throughout much of the region led to volume declines of 2.5% for the quarter, confirming Coca-Cola's own 4% decline in soda sales in North America that it reported last week. Coke investors need to remember that Coke, with its global operations, is not influenced by U.S.-centric consumer figures so much as domestically focused companies.

The Company competes with The Coca-Cola Company (Coca-Cola), PepsiCo, Inc. (PepsiCo), Nestle, S.A. (Nestle), Kraft Foods Inc. (Kraft) and The Cott Corporation (Cott).
Advisors' Opinion:- [By Patricio Kehoe]
The first on the list is The Coca-Cola Company (KO), in which Citadel disclosed a $267 million stake with over 6.46 million shares. The Coca-Cola Company is the best global brand (in terms of brand equity) and the world麓s largest producer of soft drinks. The company sells products in more than 200 countries and owns or licenses more than 500 brands. It operates in a highly competitive industry with PepsiCo (PEP), Nestle (NSRGY), Groupe Danone (GPDNF), Kraft Foods (KRFT) and Dr. Pepper Snapple Group (DPS). Due to this, the firm's strategy is to use its brands and financial strength to achieve long-term growth. Additionally, it has created an extensive and well-organized global distribution system, which cannot be replicated by any of its competitors at least at a reasonable cost. It has a proven commitment to returning cash to investors, with a current dividend yield of 2.94% which is considered quite good to protect investors' purchasing power.

Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and Dr. Pepper Snapple (DPS) are the three major soda makers making great waves in the soft drink market. However, of the three companies, Coca-Cola maintains the largest market share globally. The company takes the lead in the U.S, with 41.9% market dominance, followed by PepsiCo, with 28.5% market share. Dr. Pepper Snapple keeps a distant third position with 16.7% market dominance level. However, in terms of stock performance in the last five years, Dr. Pepper Snapple takes the lead with a 95% gain in share price to investors. Coca-Cola trails with an 80% price gain, while PepsiCo lags behind them with 38% price gain to investors during the same time frame. The Coca-Cola stock maintains a price earnings ratio similar to PepsiCo, but the stock trades at a premium of 6% when compared with PepsiCo and Dr. Pepper Snapple, which are its two main competitors in the market. On the scale of dividend yield, Coca-Cola offers investors a dividend yield of 3% compared to 2.85% for PepsiCo and 3.45% for Dr. Pepper Snapple.

Shares of Dr. Pepper (DPS) have been trouncing those of Coca-Cola (KO), PepsiCo (PEP) and even Monster Beverage (MNST) this year–but today it’s getting pounded thanks to a Citigroup downgrade.
Sure, it’s been a great year for Dr. Pepper Snapple. It’s gained 21% so far this year, easily besting PepsiCo’s 6.5% rise, Monster Beverages 6.9% advance and Coca-Cola’s 1.4 % increase. Now, however, it’s time for Dr. Pepper’s shares to “take a breather,” explain Citigroup’s Wendy Nicholson and Peter Chun:
Dr. Pepper Snapple has appreciated 22% year-to-date, far outpacing Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Monster Beverage and the S&P500. This relative outperformance comes despite Dr. Pepper Snapple’s outlook for only 0%-1% top line growth (with volumes expected to be down more than 1%) and 6%-8% EPS growth in 2014. With this big move in the stock now behind us, we downgradeDr. Pepper Snapple to a Neutral rating. Our reasons for the downgrade are as follows:
U.S. CSD category growth has improved, but not by much;
r. Pepper Snapple intends to reduce ad spending while its big competitors intend to increase it, and we fear that this could pressureDr. Pepper Snapple’s market shares;
Snapple has historically been an iconic brand, but it is too small to really move the needle for Dr. Pepper Snapple , and overall,Dr. Pepper Snapple’s stills portfolio is struggling;
r. Pepper Snapple’s RCI initiatives are impressive and ongoing, but despite lower advertising spending this year, we don expect much margin expansion, and we wonder if the balance sheet improvements are largely behind us;
From a stock market perspective, investor rotation away from EM (which has benefitted Dr. Pepper Snapple) has probably largely played out;
DPS cash flow has been terrific for a while but an extra issfrom either Coca-Cola or Pep - [By Victor Selva]
That cash allows PepsiCo to pay a 2.8% dividend. Other competitors in the industry include Coca-Cola Co. (KO) with a dividend yield of 3% and Dr. Pepper Snapple Group Inc. (DPS) with 2.95%.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Dan Caplinger]
But SodaStream is continuing to pull out all stops in order to improve its results. SodaStream's recent partnership with Samsung to incorporate carbonation technology into high-end refrigerators could help drive growth for consumers who don't want to deal with a separate appliance in their kitchens. Moreover, SodaStream's deal in March with bottler Cott (NYSE: COT ) to produce soda syrup within the U.S. should help it boost its efficiency in getting flavors to domestic customers.
- [By Dan Moskowitz]
Cott (NYSE: COT ) produces and sells over 200 different types of beverages in over 50 countries, and it implements a highly effective strategy. Cott is what is known as a Fast Follower, which makes it unique to other beverage companies.
