Top Industrial Disributor Companies To Invest In 2014

Taking cues from a troubling and unexpected slowdown in China's growth, markets suffered their worst day in months on Monday. Two explosions near the finish line of the Boston Marathon this afternoon drove stocks down further as investors struggled to understand the attacks. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) lost 265 points, or 1.8%, to close at 14,599.

All 30 Dow stocks lost ground today, and Procter & Gamble (NYSE: PG  ) ended as one of just five to lose less than 1%. Losing 0.5% was enough to earn P&G a spot among the day's top performers as the company raised its dividend by 7%, to an annual payout of around 3%.

Industrials and energy stocks slipped on the Chinese slowdown, as the country saw its industrial production advance 9.5% in the first quarter. While that growth isn't shabby these days from a domestic standpoint, it's a 0.5% slowdown from last year's clip. China's GDP grew at 7.7% after growing by 7.9% in the fourth quarter. General Electric (NYSE: GE  ) ended Monday as one of the worst-performing blue chips in the index, losing 2.8%.

While it's not obvious from the chart, you can separate these institutions into three different buckets. The first bucket concerns the most widely discussed too-big-to-fail banks: JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Citigroup, and Wells Fargo. Then comes the unofficial too-big-to-fail lenders (those with assets in excess of $50 billion and thus subject to the Federal Reserve's more stringent stress test process). This group contains U.S. Bank (NYSE: USB  ) , PNC Financial (NYSE: PNC  ) , and BB&T Bank (NYSE: BBT  ) , among others. And the final group encompasses lesser-known banks like First Niagara Financial (NASDAQ: FNFG  ) and People's United Financial (NASDAQ: PBCT  ) with between $20 billion and $50 billion in assets.

Last month, a jointly-owned subsidiary of Energy Transfer Partners (NYSE: ETP  ) and British BG Group became the third facility to get the go-ahead for global LNG exports. While Energy Transfer will handle the financing and construction end of things, BG Group will have exclusive export rights for the eventual gas. Sunoco Logistics Partners is an MLP that many Fools have gotten to know better over the past year, particularly those that hold units of Energy Transfer Partners (NYSE: ETP  ) . Energy Transfer picked up a significant stake in SXL when it acquired Sunoco last year, including 32.4% of SXL's limited partner units, as well as its general partner stake and incentive distribution rights. Sunoco Logistics has a strong presence in the Northeast, but it is the partnership's pipeline in West Texas that has investor's attention lately. SXL is reversing the flow of its Permian Express pipeline to carry crude from the Permian Basin out to Houston. It is slated to begin delivering 90,000 barrels per day sometime in the second quarter of this year.

    Winners
Given the current state of U.S. energy production, most midstream companies are winners these days. Kinder Morgan Energy Partners (NYSE: KMP  ) got things started off on the right foot, reporting in mid-April and beating expectations on revenue and EPS. Here are some highlights from around the industry:

Buckeye Partners (NYSE: BPL  ) trounced analyst expectations on the top and bottom lines, and recorded a distribution coverage ratio of 1.21 times payouts, allowing the partnership to boost its distribution. DCP Midstream Partners' (NYSE: DCP  ) distributable cash flow popped 40% year over year, and the partnership completed its Eagle Ford dropdown transaction with parent company DCP Midstream, boosting its stake in the lucrative South Texas shale play. Boardwalk Energy Partners' (NYSE: BWP  ) operating revenue and net income increased 5% and 10% year over year. More importantly, distributable cash flow popped 24%, though the partnership elected to hold the distribution flat quarter over quarter. Energy Transfer Partners (NYSE: ETP  ) had no distribution increase either, but things are looking better than they have in a while. Production in the Eagle Ford Shale is driving growth at ETP, and the partnership is reorganizing into an operation that is stronger and more diverse than ever before.

Very strong results here, now let's take a look at some midstream companies that didn't perform as well.

Susser Holdings (NYSE: SUSS) shares rose 36.54% to $77.87. The volume of Susser Holdings shares traded was 1198% higher than normal. Energy Transfer Partners LP (NYSE: ETP) announced its plans to acquire Susser Holdings in a deal valued at around $1.8 billion.
